Thermes de Caracalla
Les thermes de Caracalla font partie des grands thermes impériaux de Rome. Entre 10 000 et 15 000 personnes s’y rendaient tous les jours.
Aurelius Antoninus, surnommé Caracalla, entreprit la construction des Thermae Antoninianae, ou Thermes de Caracalla, à partir de 212 ap. J.-C. Ce sont les empereurs Elagabal et Sévère Alexandre qui achevèrent la construction du complexe (bâtiment thermal et portiques environnants).
Les thermes occupaient une superficie d’environ 9 ha. Une dérivation spéciale de l’Aqua Marcia apportait l’eau nécessaire dans citernes (18 citernes pouvant contenir 10 000 m3 d’eau). Le côté Nord-Est des thermes (en bordure de la Via Nova) était constitué d’un portique, précédé de deux étages de pièces voutées (probablement des boutiques). Dans les côtés Nord-Ouest et Sud-Est, les grandes exèdres contenaient des salles chauffées. Le côté Sud-Ouest était occupé par les citernes, peut-être un stade et deux bibliothèques.
Environ 1 600 personnes pouvaient profiter en même temps des thermes. Le caldarium (bain chaud) était une grande salle circulaire de 34 m de diamètre (plus de 1000 m2 de surface), surmontée d’une coupole. La salle la plus vaste, 58 m sur 24 m, était le frigidarium (bain froid).
Des fouilles réalisées à différentes époques ont mis au jour de nombreuses œuvres d’art dont le fameux groupe du Taureau Farnèse, la statue colossale d’Hercule, une Vénus, une Bacchante, quelques bustes des Sévères. Les souterrains fouillés au début du XXe siècle présentent également un grand intérêt : on y trouve les pièces de service nécessaires au bon fonctionnement de l’établissement et le Mithraeum (temple à Mithra) le plus imposant de Rome.
Les thermes étaient en effet chauffés été comme hiver. Il y avait sous le bâtiment central 49 fours consommant environ 20 kg de bois / heure. Pour 10 heures de fonctionnement par jour, il fallait donc quotidiennement environ 10 tonnes de bois (20 m3 = 25 stères). L’approvisionnement en bois était un des principaux soucis des gestionnaires des thermes. C’était un aspect tellement important qu’il était régi par des lois les obligeant à stocker au moins un mois de bois en avance. La capacité de stockage des souterrains était de 2 000 tonnes de bois (environ 4000 m3 = 5000 stères), soit l’équivalent d’une consommation de 6-7 mois.
