Pont Sublicius

Le Pont Sublicius est le premier pont en bois a avoir été construit à Rome pour franchir le Tibre.

Le Pont Sublicius, construit en bois, était le plus ancien pont de Rome. Il reliait le Forum Boarium à la rive droite du Tibre. On attribue sa construction au roi Ancus Marcius. Il n’existe plus aujourd’hui, mais on sait qu’il était situé non loin du Pont Aemilius. Le Pont Sublicius tire sans doute son nom de sublicae qui désigne des « poutres » ou des « pilotis ». Emporté à plusieurs reprises par les eaux (notamment par la grande crue de 23 av. J.-C.), il fut toujours reconstruit en bois.

La seule représentation certaine du pont Sublicius date d’Antonin le Pieux. Il s’agit d’un médaillon frappé entre 140 ap. J.-C. et 143 ap. J.-C. On peut y voir Horatius Coclès qui traverse le fleuve à la nage. On sait en effet qu’au VIe siècle av. J.-C., il défendit, seul face à l’armée de Porsenna, l’accès du Pont Sublicius qui permettait d’entrer dans Rome, pendant que ses compagnons détruisaient l’ouvrage (cf. Tite-Live 2, 10).

Ce pont marquait la limite entre la navigation maritime et la navigation fluviale.
